Budgetspex Lenses Information

The difference between stock and non stock prescription lenses.

Price and Availability

Our first task is to help you to understand the difference between stock lenses and prescription surfaced lenses.

Our standard index for stock lenses are 1.50 index and the range for stock in this index is between +6.00 dioptres combined and -6.00 dioptres combined.

Now you may be intrigued by the term “combined”, well here goes. A lens may have either or both a spherical power and a cylindrical power. If we combine both spherical and cylindrical powers we determine the maximum lens power.

You may say but I also have an axis, well that may be so but the axis number only tells you the orientation of the lens when fitted into a pair of glasses.  It has no bearing on the maximum power.

If  your prescription, "from herein we will use the term RX", has a sphere of +6.00 and a cylinder of +1.00 the combined power is +7.00 thus greater than the maximum power in the standard stock range.

If your RX has a sphere of +6.00 but the cylinder is -1.00 the combined power is only +6.00, this is because the cylinder is in the opposite meridian.

Conversely if your RX has a sphere of -6.00 and the cylinder is -1.00 the combined power is -7.00, which again is greater than the maximum power in the stock range, whereas spherical -6.00 cylindrical +1.00 has a maximum power of -6.00, this is because the cylinder is also in the opposite meridian.

Also if any RX has a prism in one or both eyes or a cylindrical power greater than +/-2.00 dioptres it will be outside of the stock lens range.

You may have an add for reading or intermediate work, this figure is added only to the spherical power of your RX, our website has the facility to enter this figure and merge it into your RX to show your actual reading prescription.

The other thing to understand is that stock lenses are made in vast quantities thus are always less expensive than RX surfaced lenses which are made individually.

Different index lenses carry different stock ranges, our website checks your RX  "if you have registered it" against ranges of available lenses for your RX and displays all available lenses stock or surfaced with the best value budget lenses selected as default.

We cannot supply stock for one eye and non stock for the other, it is beyond the limitations of this website.

Lens Tints

Lens Tints and Driving Restrictions

Lens tints are defined in two ways - Absorption and Transmission.

The are described in percentages of light being either absorbed "blocked" by the lens tint or transmitted "allowed to pass through" to the eye

It is simple if 20% of light is blocked 80% passes through, that is 20% ABS or 80% Tr.

Driving
Lenses are deemed unsuitable for driving if light transmission is less than 8%, or if the tint affects the perception and recognition of traffic lights. For night driving, transmission should not be less than 80%.

EVA® filter tints

EVA® filter tints

EVA® filter tints

EVA® filter tints are ideal for...

  • Computers
  • Office work
  • Reading
  • Working under fluorescent lights

  • EVA ® Filter Lens technology was invented by Dr. Wertheim , a Visual Research Scientist and Optometrist who has studied for more than thirty years reading and visual enhancement
  • A Study by the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety shows that almost ninety per cent of employees who work on computers for more than three hours a day suffer from some form of eye trouble .
  • Laboratory and office environment tests have proved that the EVA® filter system increases comprehension , reading speed and reduces eye strain and reading errors.
  • Now you can have the most comfortable filter to wear for all of your office and indoor tasks.
  • The EVA® (Enhanced Visual Amplification) lens is UV safe. It reduces glare, eye strain and visual haze by attenuating those light frequencies most annoying to the eye.
  • The four filter tints are cosmetically attractive, light shades that increase an individual's functionality and visual comfort.

  • Almost clear and will help prevent cataracts, macular and corneal edema and senile macular degeneration due to ultraviolet light .
  • There is mounting documented evidence that UV-B is the most harmful UV wavelength to the eye. UV-A at 315-380nm is the lowest energy level, although it still carries potential harm to the eye.
  • Cr39 lenses tinted with UV 400 filter tints block both UV-A and UV-b up to this level

Lens Thickness Comparison

Lens Thickness Comparison

Lens Thickness Comparison

Lens Thickness Comparison

  • 1.50 Index Our standard lens is single vision 1.5 index Cr 39 plastic resin and is adequate for most people
  • 1.53 Index This lens is ideal for rimless and semi rimless designs, as it is virtually unbreakable and very lightweight, although a little thicker than high index lenses.
  • 1.56 Index The tensile strength of this index is lower than any other in general, although some brands have overcome this problem. It is slightly thinner than 1.50 but its lack of strength renders it unusable for Rimless.
  • 1.60 Index Our lowest priced thinner lens.
  • 1.67 Index Our mid priced thinner lens.
  • 1.74 Index Is the thinnest plastic lens currently available.

As you can see demonstrated in the chart, the saving in lens thickness is most dramatic when used in high minus prescriptions.

Aspheric Lenses

Aspheric Lenses

Aspheric Lenses

Aspheric Lenses

  • Aspheric Lenses are typically designed to give a thinner lens, and also show less distortion of the viewer's eyes as seen by other people, thus producing a better aesthetic appearance.
  • Aspheric lenses typically do not provide better vision than standard lenses, but do allow a thinner, flatter lens to be made without compromise to the optical performance.

Hard Coated Lenses

Hard Coated Lenses

Scratch-Resistant Coating

  • At present there is no lens or coating available that is scratch proof, there is however a surface coating that is much more scratch resistant than the lens material.
  • Hard coated lenses that are treated front and back with a clear, scratch-resistant coating have a much harder surface that is more resistant to scratching, whether from dropping your glasses on the floor or occasionally cleaning them with a paper towel.
  • Incidentaly paper is quite abrasive, especially news paper, so it is unwise to leave your new spectacles face down on a newspaper or magazine.
  • Lenses supplied to children, especially, benefit from a scratch-resistant hard coat for greater durability.
  • Today, most eyeglass lenses, including high-index lenses and lenses made of polycarbonate and Trivex, have a scratch-resistant coating applied as standard as the lenses would be unhandleable in their raw state.
  • Keep in mind that even the best scratch-resistant coating can't completely protect your lenses from wear and tear. To keep your glasses looking new, store them in a protective cushioned case when not in use, and clean your lenses with a microfiber cloth.
  • Be aware that polycarbonate lenses although very strong are easily damaged by chemicals such as alcohol and acetone, you will need to be very carefull when buying proprietry lens cleaning sprays because some contain IPA and will most likely cause crazing or cracking of polycarbonate lenses.
  • Also, be wary of products that promise to repair scratched lenses. These products attempt to fill in the scratches, but it is impossible for them to make the scratches disappear so the lenses look new again.

Hard Coated Scratch Resistant

Hard Coated Scratch Resistant

Hard Coated Scratch Resistant

  • Cr39 plastic lenses can scratch quite easily if not treated carefully, so a much harder plastic coating is added to the surface to help reduce scratching.
  • We do not charge for scratch resistant coating on any lens we supply.
