For many years I have been appalled by the prices charged by opticians for spectacles. I just cannot see how a piece of wire and two lenses can possibly merit the extortionate charges levied by high street opticians.
I recently came across a website called www.budgetspex.com which offered spectacles to your own prescription at prices starting at £12.49, delivered to your door within a few days. I decided to try them out and sent in my prescription as provided by my optician at the last visit, choosing one of the cheaper frames. Three days later my new specs arrived, complete in a hard case.
Unfortunately, I had provided the wrong details in the prescription, and they were therefore not very satisfactory (my fault entirely). I sent an email message to budgetspex explaining my error and asking if the lenses could be changed to my proper prescription and if so the costs involved.. I received a reply instantaneousy offering to replace the lenses free of charge if I sent the specs back. I duly did so, and again three days later I received the altered specs. This time they were perfect.
It is refreshing to come across a company demonstrating such efficiency and providing an answer to the disgraceful prices charged by run-of-the-mill opticians.
Whilst I ordered the cheapest frame as a trial, they do provide a large variety of designer frames, rimmed, semi-rimmed and rimless. They do not provide bifocals or varifocals, as this would be unsatisfactory without physical examination of the eyes ** see below.
I am so delighted with the service provided that I felt I should pass it on to you all. I recommend you have a look at their website.
(Incidentally, I am not on commission! - just a canny Scot anxious to save a few pennies).
